From Idea to Harmony: The Birth of The Academy for Young Musicians
Embarking on a journey from a simple idea to its full realization is an investment in time and passion. The question that sparked my own journey was straightforward: How can I enhance the band experience for students?
As an educator, there's immense satisfaction in witnessing students genuinely curious about a subject because they find joy in it. Students thrive on challenges—being pushed, yet supported. The sweet satisfaction of achieving a goal they doubted they could accomplish is what I cherish the most—those "click" moments.
After about 15 or 16 years of teaching, the last few dedicated to private lessons, I yearned to deepen my impact. The idea of creating a space where all my private students could play together in one ensemble took root. The challenge lay in the varying stages of development among middle school, high school, and elementary students. Could it work?
With a majority of middle school students, the plan crystallized: use high school students to mentor the middle schoolers, enticing the elementary students to follow their cool elder counterparts. The concept took shape—I envisioned an ensemble blending middle and elementary school students, with high school students providing leadership. Weekends seemed ideal, avoiding conflicts with other afterschool programs. The goal? To push for more challenging music, strengthen individual players for their schools, and, in turn, elevate their band programs.
This became my foundation. While formulating the ensemble, my students' questions fueled their curiosity—How to improvise in jazz? Can I explore beyond the blues scale? Enhancing solos? Drum Major aspirations? Their inquiries revealed a broader need. I realized I could address everything they desired to know musically. Each subject could have its dedicated class—Jazz improvisation, music theory, conducting, playing a second instrument—the possibilities were endless. Thus, The Academy for Young Musicians was conceived.
The journey from a simple idea to the creation of a space where musical curiosity thrives and students find joy in learning became the heartbeat of The Academy for Young Musicians.
